Weave Your Stories Forward - Let the Healing Begin
Dr. Mary Welsh took the loss of her daughter, Susie, to write four books and start her non-profit Susie Q’s Kids which provides comfort bags to kids in need. She values the art of storytelling to weave the lives of loved ones forward into our present lives. Her adult and children’s grief books create conversations and healing opportunities.
Dr. Mary understands the value of memories and stories as they connect us to our loved ones, the past, present, and future. Her daughter Susie McBride-Welsh died from a sepsis infection at the age of 31 following a lifetime of medical challenges. Susie’s resilience in life, her appreciation for life, and her ever-smiling and positive outlook on life touched all she knew and others who never met her but benefited from her generosity.
As a mother, how do you endure the loss of a child?
How can we heal? How do we move forward? How do we talk about our loved ones? How do we make sure they are not forgotten? Through her speaking, books, and non-profit connections; Dr. Mary discusses the value of story-telling, remembering and sharing our precious memories, and how to embrace them and weave them into our current situations and let others know its OK to talk about them, to remember them, and to celebrate them. Embrace positive reflections as our loved ones are with us always, learn some techniques to heal and normalize their lives in our present-day experiences and opportunities.
These same techniques can be used in any situation where you are challenged,
it takes opening up and being honest with yourself and others. It is through conversations that we remember and challenge the status quo or repeating or feeling the actions of the past keep us prisoner and we have no hope. Hope is what keeps us moving forward, embrace it!
Join Dr. Mary as she highlights the following:
· The Four Aspects of Positive Reflection: to remember, to reflect, to recreate (your new normal), and to relate (self-care, helping others, and giving back in the community).
· The value of story-telling and sharing
· The importance of addressing What If/But I Did statements to change the narrative (examples will be provided)
· How to weave the memories and stories of our loved ones and our challenges forward (examples will be provided)
· Interactive discussion to encourage some sharing from the group
